    I am

    But in taking care of you
    I lose myself
    Picking up the pieces
    Of your futile resistance
    And ineffective railing against the system

    It’s as if
    I am the ball
    In the pinball machine
    Shunted back and forth
    Each place where I should belong
    Shutting me out
    Defining things
    Constructing matters
    So that I have to fight
    If I’m going to stay
    When I just want
    To belong with ease
