About

Loolwa Khazzoom has published articles on a diverse range of topics, for leading periodicals internationally — including Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, Marie Claire, Yoga Journal, Seventeen, BBC News, and Self. Her current focus is on health & wellness writing, with a speciality in complementary and alternative medicine and natural pain relief. In this capacity, she has interviewed leading medical specialists and scientists, including Andrew Weil, MD, Martin Rossman, MD, David Simon, MD, James Dillard, MD, Jill Bolte-Taylor, PhD, Kenneth Pelletier, PhD, and Larry Dossey, MD.

Loolwa has published two books: The Flying Camel: Essays on Identity by Women of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Heritage (Seal Press, 2003) and Consequence: Beyond Resisting Rape (Pearl in a Million Press, 2001), endorsed by leading authorities and taught throughout the Ivy League and at universities across the country. She wrote her first book, Roopy the Walking Hut, when she was six years old. Unfortunately, it went the way of the Mickey Mouse puzzle box and the ceramic bear with a gouged eye.

Loolwa received a BA Cum Laude in political science from Barnard College-Columbia University and a certificate of completion from the youth division of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied flute, piano, and composition throughout her childhood.

Drawing from her rich experience in life, Loolwa brings fresh angles and a unique depth to her writing. She is a health & wellness coach and patient advocate, a musician, a Jewish multicultural educator, a social justice activist and community organizer, and a former self-defense instructor. In these capacities, she has lectured, offered workshops, and performed at leading institutions across the globe — including Harvard University on the East Coast and the Simon Wiesenthal Center on the West Coast.

A 1st generation Iraqi-American on one side and 18th generation European-American on another, Loolwa was raised in a multi-ethnic, inter-faith, mixed-class family with various physical abilities, seuxal orientations, mother tongues, and political views. Exposed to this wealth of diversity early on in life, Loolwa understood the complexities of identity and, over time, learned to navigate with ease between seemingly contradictory worlds. With this background, she naturally connects with a wide range of people on a deep level — enabling her to draw out the subtle nuances of a story and therefore offer layers and textures frequently glossed over by other writers.
